Step awayyy from the buffet

Most everyone has heard that if you want to lose weight, you should take smaller portions, put your fork down between bites, chew slowly, etc. etc. etc.

But researchers have found that a bevy of other behaviors may cause people to gorge, especially at buffets (which, really, Congress should just outlaw until we get over this obesity crisis).

To wit, researchers found that overweight diners sat 16 feet closer to the buffet than normal weight diners. They were also more likely to face the food, use larger plates, eat with forks instead of chopsticks, and serve themselves right away instead of browsing the food.

One assumes that counseling people NOT to do these things has a shot at stopping them from eating quite so much. Perhaps something to pass along to your portly patients who are planning a trip to a buffet-laden place like Vegas. Or a cruise.

my buffet strategy:

-sit closer to the buffet? check
-hit the buffet as soon as i sit down? check
-use larger plates? check
-face the buffet? usually but not always

in addition, a technique i learned from a friend and true buffet connoisseur: don't fear stacking things on top of each other and contaminating food groups. it allows for a greater food-to-plate ratio.

fortunately my 24.4 bmi does buck the trend in the study but just by a hair.

Contaminating food groups can lead to some great taste surprises, indeed.

You should swap tips with my relative (nickname "Scraps."). His main tactic is to pace himself-- which means he can stretch out a $5.99 Elby's buffet to span all of the hours between lunch and dinner.

scraps, i like that. sounds like we would get along. i would be lying if i said i have never stuck around in a buffet from one meal to the next. breakfast to lunch isn't too hard to merge but it's a little tough to do lunch then stick around for dinner. that's the sign of a true pro.
